The power of an organisation comes from its people. With their knowledge and skill - and their personal characteristics - it is people who establish the strength of the organisation. They must develop their own vision and work together to create a safe environment.
Vision and safety are crucial.
Hence, as a cognitive psychologist, my business - Julysis - is focused on the power of the organisation through its people to maintain a culture and of safety. In particular, Human Factors consultancy aims to examine and strengthen the human factors at work in the business environment.Vision
What do we really want?
"I have seemingly achieved everything. And yet I do not feel I've done what I should have...”
Such a sigh can indicate that there is a big difference between success in the outer world and the inner experience.
In determining our goal we are often strongly influenced by what the environment and what family, company or an institution thinks. We do not take the time to examine our inner selves and what our true motives are - what we really want and where we are really trying to go.
Only when we have developed our own vision, can we walk our own path purposefully. Then we will do what we are good at and drive forward to achieve.
To begin the journey of exploration, we must first remove our inhibitions to identify and explore all the options that suit us as individuals.
The job of the trained professional is to facilitate exploration and to help shift boundaries based on new knowledge. This is where I can help. With my high level of sensitivity (HSP), my global orientation and my broad perspective developed through years of experience and extensive study, I can easily connect with people from varied backgrounds and with different approaches to the things that matter in life.Safety
What we can avoid
Often safety is considered a technical and procedural matter. But disasters like the sinking of the Costa Concordia, the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig and the fire in Chemie Pack have once again shown that human error is more often than not the cause of a catastrophe.
Hence, in any safety policy, great attention must be paid to human factors. All stakeholders need to be aware of the risks associated with their actions and recognise potential hazards.
This requires
- top management to prioritise safety - and especially the human factors, since the continued existence of the organisation depends on it
- a 'blame free culture' - in other words a corporate culture that is open to insight and is solution-focused and is not dominated by guilt (blaming and shaming)
- an organisation that not only adopts proper procedures, but also looks at patterns that have led to unsafe situations
- sensitivity and alertness in order to avoid problems
- resilience: the ability to adequately function in difficult circumstances
I can raise awareness and the willingness, openness, sensitivity, responsiveness and resilience of people and encourage them to learn more in order to establish a culture of safety within the organisation.

“Julia has advised as a consultant in a change process of the safety culture at Van Oord. Through her objective and sometimes surprising observations, I learned that "strange eyes" are essential for a successful cultural change, because you yourself as part of a corporate culture have blind spots which are the same as everyone within that culture. To change that, you need to be alerted!”

"Julia and her colleague Paul Heimplaetzer from Royal Haskoning did an accident analysis of a big incident for the NEM. In general I found our cooperation very pleasant. Especially the sessions we have done here at the office in Leiden. Julia pointed out a number of painful points in a good way. I mean she knew how to do so, without having too much resistance arising in me. Because of this I really started to overthink a couple of things."

“Julia, once you stepped on board of my ship the HAM 318, at the request of the Board of Van Oord to do the incident investigation, as you know, I was pretty skeptical about the job that you and Shirine had to perform on behalf of the Board.
Both you and Shirine have succeeded to get through to the entire crew by the conversations that you and your colleague have conducted; this is unique and will be hard to match by other people.
You have been successful purely for the fact that you are open and honest and you, yes, you can really eat like a docker, so warn your future customers.......! Good luck with your new career!”
